Early Years · Ages 3–7
Why the early years matter.
Between the ages of three and seven, children learn to read, write and work with numbers, and they form their first feelings about school. In England this covers the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which ends with the Reception year, and Key Stage 1 in Years 1 and 2.
We want every child to meet new challenges with curiosity rather than worry. Getting the basics secure, in a way that feels enjoyable, is the best start we can give.
Core skills we support
-
Phonics and early reading: systematic synthetic phonics, blending and segmenting sounds, building fluency and reading for pleasure. Children in Year 1 take the national Phonics Screening Check.
-
Writing: letter formation, handwriting, spelling and putting together clear sentences.
-
Number: counting, place value, number bonds, early addition and subtraction, shape and measure.
-
Communication and language: listening, speaking in full sentences and growing vocabulary.
-
Personal, social and emotional development: concentration, turn-taking, independence and resilience.
How our tutors help
Our tutors are young, warm and full of energy, and young children respond to that. Sessions are short, playful and structured, using games, stories and hands-on activities. We follow what your child is learning at school so that home and school support each other.
We keep you closely involved, with simple ideas to practise between sessions, and we adjust the pace as your child grows in confidence.
Looking ahead
For families considering independent schools, strong early foundations also prepare children for 7+ and 8+ assessments, which we cover on our 8+ page.
