History Tutors

Ryan McMeekin

History & English Tutor

After achieving A*A*A in my A levels, I am currently in my first year at UCL studying English Literature. From this position I have not only been provided with a first-class education but have also experienced the countless opportunities that London provides for Arts and Humanities students wishing to pursue their studies further. During my time at Sixth Form I gave various talks to my school’s Literary Society on aspects of literature that personally interest me and I also tutored younger students on preparing to apply for English Literature at university, winning the 2015 Douglas Brown Memorial Prize for English Literature in the process.

Biography

With both of my parents coming from abroad in order to pursue opportunities in higher education, academic endeavour has always been important to me. After achieving 10A* and an A grades at GCSE, I completed my A levels in Cambridge, where I studied English Literature, History and Politics and also gained an AS level in Maths. Studying English Literature at UCL will, I hope, give me the means to pursue varied and interesting career paths in the near future.

Personal Approach

My fascination with subjects such as English Literature and History largely stems from the fact that neither subject can truly be confined to one single field of knowledge. Instead, English Literature and History are subjects naturally linked with disciplines such as Art, Philosophy, and Music, a concept that I aim to emphasise in my tutoring. Learning is not simply a case of reading and revising but is rather an opportunity to explore many other aspects of human knowledge, a prospect that I believe will allow tutees to experience the same interest that I have in these subjects.

When I'm not tutoring...

When I’m not tutoring, you’ll probably find me playing tennis or, of course, reading! I also enjoy going to the theatre and socialising with my friends on a regular basis.

Daniel Hutton

English & History Tutor

I graduated from the University of Warwick in 2013 with a First Class degree in English and Theatre Studies. My background is in literature and theatre, and I have maintained an interest in English and Drama since a very young age, giving me a wide range of knowledge around these areas. Alongside my work as a tutor, I also work in theatre. I have been involved in a number of award-winning shows and companies.

Biography

In 2010, I enrolled at the University of Warwick after a successful and fulfilling school career, during which time I picked up 2 A*s and an A at A Level alongside a host of awards and a high level involvement in school life. I was President of the Warwick University Drama Society and since graduating I have worked in theatre and surrounding industries, with experience directing, producing, writing and script-reading.

Personal Approach

My approach is calm, collected and considerate. I believe that the crux of any successful student/tutor relationship is communication and that if ideas and questions are talked about and listened to freely, then any subject can be understood. I believe in dialogue and conversation as the core of all learning, and try to ask carefully considered questions to allow students to reach their own conclusions and feel in control of their work.

When I'm not tutoring...

Alongside my work as a tutor, I work a freelance theatre practitioner, with a wide range of experience over the past three years. I have worked with some of Britain's leading theatres and theatre directors, and have received a number of prizes and high-profile reviews in the national press, in recognition of my work.

Oliver Jones

History Tutor

I have recently completed my degree at the University of Bristol where I studied History and achieved a 2.i Bachelor of Arts. Before that I was at Harrow School which I got into with a Sports and academic scholarship and left with 3 A* and 1 A and A-Level. Since leaving university I have been working for a couple of different tutoring companies in London.

Biography

My educational background is Eaton House School to Summer Fields School to Harrow School to Bristol University. I enjoyed all of them greatly, and would have no qualms recommending them. My career is limited by the fact that I have only recently finished university however its lack of longevity is covered by its diversity.

Personal Approach

My personal experience has led me to think that the concept of 'natural talent' is greatly overstated in schools in England, and think that hard along with an interest in the subject / topic are far more useful in the long run than natural ability. I always learnt best from teachers at school who I liked, so think that building a rapport is extremely important as well.

When I'm not tutoring...

I have just left Bristol and have a few irons in the fire at moment. I would say I'm quite entrepreneurial, and am in the process of building a sports tipping website. I also help out quite often at a company called RumRunner, which my younger brother work for, serving drinks at events and generally helping whenever I can. In my own time, I'm a big Leicester City fan. I also enjoy films, music and reading.

Dan Scales

History Tutor

I am 21, currently studying an MA in History at UCL. Before moving to UCL, I graduated from the University of Kent with a First Class BA in History. My studies have covered a broad range of subjects, from the late Medieval period to the Second World War, yet throughout I have retained a focus on intellectual and cultural history. I am particularly interested in Early Soviet Russia, the Enlightenment and the History of Oriental Studies.

Biography

I grew up in Norwich, studying English Language (A), Psychology (B) and, naturally History (A), at A Level. After three enjoyable years in Canterbury, I hope that UCL - a self proclaimed 'global' university in a truly global city - will give me the opportunity to further, and then utilise professionally, my passion for History and academia as a whole. I see tutoring as intrinsic to this.

Personal Approach

I feel we really can learn from the past, but only if we appreciate the context and debates around historical events, not just their chronology. However, during fast paced, pre-planned classroom lessons, a student is unlikely to have the opportunity to discover the answers to their own personal questions, or to develop their own thoughts beyond those prescribed to them. Thus, I strive to provide a personal, discursive experience to my students.

When I'm not tutoring...

In my free time I play lacrosse (a bizarre American sport) in the winter, cricket in the summer. I also enjoy live music, especially in small, intimate venues. Finally, I attempt to travel as much as possible, and wish to visit St. Petersburg and Istanbul in the near future.

Emma Stevenson

History & English Tutor

I am a final year undergraduate currently studying Ancient History at UCL. My particular interests lie in Intellectual History through the ages and the exploration of big ideas such as magic and the imagination. I studied History, Classical Civilisation and English Literature at A-Level. During this time I received an award in 2013 for the highest grade achieved in my year group (99/100) for AS History.

Biography

I am young, energetic and always looking to broaden my horizons. Since I was small I have always loved to learn. I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful education, where my talents were realised and nurtured. When I was 16 I was part of the Cambridge HE+ programme, a project aimed at enhancing the academic performance of the best state school students in the country. In 2014 I was the editor of my college magazine, and I have regularly kept up a blog for aspiring history students.

Personal Approach

I am very enthusiastic and excited about helping young students to achieve their very best and share in my love of learning. I offer a truly comprehensive and personalised experience for every student, as I believe that a combination of tried-and-tested methods and more creative activities is the most effective way to get the very best out of any tutee. My aim is to guide my students to their own unique conclusions, so that they may realise their full academic and personal potential.

When I'm not tutoring...

In my spare time I love to spend my day in the library, where I read, write and drink coffee. I have a particular passion for languages; I am currently learning to speak Polish, read Latin and Italian, and I have a long and ongoing relationship with Old English.

Diana Suciu

History & English Tutor

Hi, my name is Diana and I’m a first year Law student at King’s College London, having recently graduated from the American International School of Bucharest. I’ve been tutoring for the past three years, being the leader of my school’s Peer Tutoring group and teaching English, History and Humanities. Morevoer, as captain and coach of my school’s debate team, I have refined my communication and research skills in order to be able to effectively ensure the ones around me understand what I am explaining.

Biography

Born in Romania but educated in an international school, I was raised to fit the mould of interculturality. Even at home, this became a defining trait, as I learned to understand the individuality of each of my six siblings. In this sense, tutoring has come very easily to me, simply as an extension of my life as a leader, an elder and yet, still a student.

Personal Approach

During my high school years, I realized that the greatest teachers I came in contact with were not the ones with a set method of teaching but rather the ability to suit each student’s individuality. Thus, the approach that I found to be most successful when tutoring was to figure out what kind of learner the student was and adapt to that. Rather than putting stress on the student to fit to my learner profile, I prefer to improve their school career by tending to their needs. Whether this stipulates extended visual support,a non-conformist studying environment or classic lecturing, I am committed to make lessons simple to understand.

When I'm not tutoring...

When I’m not studying or working, you can find me with the debate team, on the skating rink or in a cozy restaurant with good company. I believe a healthy balance between my professional and personal life is the key to happy living.

Hanif Osman

History & Geography Tutor

My name is Hanif and I’m an International History student at the LSE, having studied for my A-levels in History, English Literature, Geography and German at sixth form. I am a highly motivated and dynamic student who, as well as sustaining academic success, has experience in instilling confidence and helping students to unlock their full potential. As well as delivering English language tuition to young children, I have experience in aiding with GCSE and A- level study and preparation.

Biography

Being of English and Palestinian descent and attending a highly international university such as LSE, my experiences have enabled me to hold a truly global and broad- minded outlook on life and education. I achieved A*A*A at A-level and 8A*s and 4As at GCSE. Although history, international studies and languages are my passion, I intend to train as a solicitor following my time at university.

Personal Approach

To me, confidence in the subject material is key. This isn’t usually achieved by simply reading through the textbook, but instead tailoring my approach to the student’s individual style of learning – be it close reading, critical analysis and discussion, or relation of the material to real life situations and interesting anecdotes. I also like to focus alot on exam technique during my tutorials.

When I'm not tutoring...

When I’m not studying or tutoring, I enjoy socialising with friends, playing 5-a- side football, reading and getting involved in politics and campaigning. I’m also going to be busy this year helping to organize the TEDxLSE conference, for which I am an executive committee member.
